Editorial & Review Policy
This page explains exactly how we produce the recommendations on Portable Power Nerd — the process, the standards we hold ourselves to, and how we stay independent. We'd rather tell you plainly what we do than dress it up.
How we research and rank
Our reviews and buying guides are built on structured analysis, not sponsored placements. Every recommendation follows the same repeatable process:
- Spec-sheet teardown — We pull the real numbers (usable watt-hours, continuous vs. surge output, battery chemistry, cycle life, charge times) from manufacturer data and cross-check them, because marketing figures and real capacity often disagree.
- Real-world math — We convert specs into the answers people actually search for: how long a unit runs a CPAP, a mini-fridge, or a space heater. Our runtime estimates account for inverter efficiency losses (typically 10–15%), not just rated capacity.
- Owner-review synthesis — We read verified-purchase reviews and long-term owner reports to surface the failure modes and quirks spec sheets never mention.
- Head-to-head comparison — Units are ranked within a price tier and use case, so "best for van life" and "best for home backup" reflect genuinely different winners.
What we do — and don't — claim
We're transparent about our methodology: our recommendations come from analysis of manufacturer specifications, published data, and aggregated owner reports. Where we cite a runtime or efficiency figure, it's an estimate derived from those sources, and we frame it as such. We do not fabricate first-person lab measurements, and we don't publish star ratings we can't substantiate.
Independence
- No paid placements. Brands cannot buy a ranking, a recommendation, or a better score. Ever.
- Affiliate links don't change our picks. We earn commissions when you buy through our links (see our disclosure), but which unit we recommend is decided before any link is added — and we routinely recommend the unit that's best for you over the one that pays most.
- We name the losers. If a popular unit is overpriced or underperforms, we say so.
Corrections & updates
When newer data, a firmware change, or a hardware revision changes our verdict, we update the article and stamp it with a revised date. If we get something wrong, tell us — we'll verify and fix it. Accuracy is the entire point.
A note on medical-adjacent content
Some of our guides cover running CPAP and other health equipment on battery power. This is general information to help you plan backup power — it is not medical advice. Always follow your equipment manufacturer's guidance and consult your healthcare provider about your specific therapy needs.
